Tybee Island’s largest and most controversial unofficial celebration, Orange Crush, is moving to Jacksonville after nearly 30 years at Savannah s beach. The annual beach party attracts mostly Black college students and young adults from across the Southeast. It is traditionally staged in April or early May and has long met with opposition from Tybee residents over incidents ranging from littering to illegal parking to violence.  Orange Crush is organized and promoted mainly through social media, and those spearheading the event this year cited “lack of resources, limited parking, civil rights violations, and political injustices” as reasons for the relocation to Jacksonville. Orange Crush is planned for June 18 through 20, coinciding with the Juneteenth holiday.
