dianne, what are you learning? reporter: kaylee, within the past hour, one of the police officers tells us here at cnn the 12-year-old girl has come through surgery and that her injuries are not expected to be life threatening in any way. they are still not sure who shot her. that is a testament to how chaotic the scene was at the mall. according to witnesses, people started pouring out of the door of the jc penney. the shooting happened between this store and foot action near the food court. c of course, normally this parking lot would be full at this hour on black friday. according to authorities, that is what the case was overnight when people were crowded in the mall and it appears two men got into a fight. the gunman shot an 18-year-old man and then attempted to run away. because there were so many police officers on duty because
blackwe black friday at the mall were quick to respond. we have dianne gallagher with more. good morning. reporter: good morning, dave. this was primetime for people shopping on thanksgiving night. the mall was packed. it was crowded. when the shots rang out, chaos erupted. people started running out of the jc penney here. the shooting happened on the second floor of the mall. police say a 21-year-old man shot an 18-year-old man twice in the torso and tried to get away. because of the heavy presence of law enforcement and black friday, those officers heard the shots and turned around and quickly shot that suspect and killed him. we were fortunate that the hoover officer was there where he needed to be. we believe at this point that maybe he prevented further

this country is stronger now than when i took office. it was an unusual thanksgiving at mar-a-lago. we ll get to that in a moment. we start with breaking news. at least two people shot and gunman killed by police in the scene at the alabama mall as black friday got under way. one victim 12 years old. it happened a river chase galleria in the birmingham s largest suburb. two people got into a fight and that led to gunfire. everybody freaked and screamed and ran into mountain high and they stuffed us in supply closets and locked the doors. they seemed prepared. we sat there for five to ten minutes freaking out and they opened the escape route doors. police on duty at the mall for black friday responded quickly. cnn s dianne gallagher has more.
