six days before the attack. a surveillance image shows him driving the van into new york city early on the morning of the shooting. two hours later, james is seen in a yellow hard hat and orange construction jacket entering a booklyn subway station, wheeling what appears to be the same black cart later recovered at the crime scene. then, inside a packed train, police say james donned a gas mask, unleashed two smoke grenades then fired 33 rounds with a glock 17 handgun at captive comeurts, striking 10 and injuring approximately 20 others. as terrified and bloodied passengers stumbled out of the smoke-filled subway car, james tossed his disguise and slipped on to another train. he rode one more stop, and then walked out on to the streets of new york city, leaving behind a rich pile of clues. police are now trying to determine his whereabouts during the 30-hour manhunt. this appears to show james the next day, walking in manhattan s east village, and sitting on a
police shows the alleged gunman entering a subway station early the morning of the attack, wheeling the same black cart that was later recovered at the scene. officials say james is the man who donned a gas mask, detonated two smoke bombs, and then fired 33 shots into a packed subway car. after the attack, police say james slipped on to another train car, rode one stop, and escaped, sparking a multistate manhunt. but police did recover some important evidence at the scene, including a .9 millimeter gun, three extended magazines, a hatchet, gasoline, and four smoke grenades. they also found bank cards and a key to this u-haul that investigators say james had rented. a search of the van turned up a heater, some clothing and blankets. they believe he spent at least one night sleeping in the back. i think first and foremost we were looking to get this guy off the street before he did any anymore carnage, brought any more carnage to the city. reporter: his arrest record spans least 15
tampering. he has three arrests in new jersey, 1991, 1992, and 2007. they are for trespass, disorderly conduct. so yesterday we recovered video of him prior to the incident entering the kings highway subway station. he had the same black cart that he is later recovered on the crime scene. pictures to my right over here. we will make those available electronically after this. this station is three blocks from where we recovered the u-haul truck rented in philadelphia. the key to the truck was recovered at the crime scene. the orange jacket was also recovered as well as his construction helmet he was wearing and we recovered that in the garbage bin in transit.
