Email Submit Groton The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Electric Boat a $64 million modification to an existing contract for the overhaul of the USS Hartford (SSN-768), a Los Angeles-class attack submarine. On Friday, the department issued a “Smart Start” modification to a $125 million contract awarded last August. The Hartford had arrived at the shipyard the previous day. “Overhaul and repair work is vitally important to EB because it allows us to manage ebbs and flows in the workload associated with the Virginia and Columbia programs, and enables our workforce to maintain proficiency in crucial skills,” Kevin Graney, EB’s president, said in a statement. “Smart Start on the Hartford is the right approach to maintain and modernize the ship and get it back to the fleet.”
