The Bitter Root Water Forum is serious about keeping the Bitterroot River clean of trash. And they are not alone. They recently received a donation of 5,000 red Clean Up All Year bags from Bitterroot Disposal. The bag stands (see photo above) are located along the river in the Bitterroot Valley, at fishing access sites and other places, including guide shops.
The Bitter Root Water Forum is getting ready for their annual River Clean-up, too. Individuals and groups sign-up to clean parts of 155-mile-long river - including the East Fork from Sula and the West Fork from Painted Rocks Dam. A Montana 2021 Watershed Stewardship Award is being given to Heather Mullee Barber of the Bitter Root Water Forum. She has been the Executive Director of the group for 10 years, working with many people in the valley, including landowners, ranchers, farmers, land managers, city and county officials, river guides and anglers, schools and irrigation districts. The forum has grown to include a staff of three and an AmeriCorps member.
The Montana Watershed Coordination Council announced her award because, as the council said in a news release, She has led the development of the Bitterroot Watershed Restoration Plan, built a successful community watershed education program and fostered the restoration, protection and improvement of 24 stream miles, providing direct benefits to the Bitterroot River and the communities that rely on it.
It takes lots people to keep our local non-profit organizations going. And in recent years, the Missoula gives website fund drive has been a nice boost for many groups, including those in the Bitterroot Valley. Bitterroot Gives has increased in size and in results each year as the on-line donation drive has made it easy to drop a few (or a lot) of dollars into your favorite organization s cashbox. The 26-hour fund-a-thon starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 6, and wraps up at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 7th. The on-line giving happens at www.missoulagives.org by selecting the Bitterroot Community tab, or just go to www.bitterrootgives.org.
