ShackStream: Indie-licious kills the ghouls & gets the jewels in Battle Axe

It’s been a long time since the proper days of titles like Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Gauntlet Legends, but these are still games that remain fond memories among many of us who played them. Today’s episode of Indie-licious is a welcome throwback to that style of game as we take on fantasy-fiction monster slaying arcade adventure in Battle Axe. Battle Axe comes to us from developer Bitmap Bureau and publisher Numskull Games. Having launched on April 29, 2021, the game is available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles, as well as PC via Steam. Inspired by the top-down arcade brawlers of the 1990s, such as Guantlet Legends, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Herc’s Adventure, Battle Axe puts you in the role of one of three heroes as you fight back the evil sorceress Etheldred and her vast dark armies. Treasure and adventure awaits for the mighty, but defeat and death lies ahead of the unprepared.

16-bit hack-n-slash Battle Axe out now on PC and consoles

16-bit hack-n-slash Battle Axe out now on PC and consoles Battle Axe on PC and consoles.  Almost doubling it’s Kickstarter target, Battle Axe is a homage to classic arcade titles like Gauntlet and Golden Axe and is available digitally on all platforms with physical editions coming to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The kingdom of Mercia has been land of fear and violence since it was taken by the tyrannical sorceress named Etheldred.  She rules the land without mercy from her tower in the icy north and every 7 years sends her armies south to gather innocents from each township and subject them to a life of slavery.  The evil sorceress has a large army at her disposal and she is able to deter threats using ‘Generators’ which spawn out monsters when an enemy is detected.  As the next culling is due the land calls out for a band of adventurers able to put an end to this evil rule once and for all and it’s pne of these champions that players will take control of.

Battle Axe Review – TheSixthAxis

23/04/212 Even as we’re hyped about a new console generation of ever more detailed graphical fidelity, pixel art remains a timeless aesthetic. Yet while plenty of indies love to use that style, the real veterans from the 8-bit and 16-bit days are much rarer, which is why retro fans should feel privileged to be able to play a new game from legendary pixel artist Henk Nieborg. Having previously worked with Bitmap Bureau on the crowdfunded Mega Drive/Genesis sci-fi arena shooter Xeno Crisis, it seemed apt for the partnership to continue with Nieborg’s own passion project. Battle Axe is a fantasy top-down brawler very much in the vein of Gauntlet or Golden Axe. With a bare-bones plot of defeating the evil sorceress Etheldred, you simply pick from a line-up of three heroes – Rooney the Viking warrior, Fae the dark elf, and Iolo the elderly druid – before hacking and slashing your way to the end.
