Suvendu Adhikari, who was among the most prominent Trinamool Congress leaders, on Saturday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. At a mega rally in Midnapore district, Shah welcomed Adhikari into the saffron party and took a swipe at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Besides Adhikari, six MLAs of the Trinamool Congress, one each from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India and the Congress also joined the BJP, according to PTI. Two-time TMC MP from Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha constituency Sunil Mondal also defected to the BJP.

Kolkata, Dec 19: Welcoming high-profile Trinamool Congress rebel Suvendu Adhikari, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday claimed there will be more desertions to the BJP from the TMC and that the West Bengal chief minister will be be left alone in her party by the time elections arrive.

Union home minister Amit Shah said there would be more desertions from the Trinamul Congress and that Bengal chief minister would be left alone in her party, his assertions coming on a day he presided over the induction of TMC heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari and several other MLAs into the BJP.
Addressing a party rally at Midnapore, Shah alleged the Mamata Banerjee’s government was steeped in corruption resulting in alienation of the masses. He exuded confidence that the BJP would form the next government in the state (with a 294-membr Assembly) with more than 200 seats.
