The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara honored 20 student artists during a presentation and reception at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on Jan. 25.

In a year filled with the unexpected, one thing has been constant: the rigorous pursuit for excellence among Carpinteriaâs most ambitious teenagers. Among this cohort of exceptional Carpinteria young people are three seniors, Laura Flores, Isa Alarcon and Luke Williams, who have been selected as finalists for Jr. Carpinterian of the Year, an honor bestowed annually to one graduating senior by the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce.Â
Flores, Alarcon and Williams have excelled in academics, sports and civic engagement, and each will receive a scholarship from the chamber. The student named Jr. Carpinterian of the Year will receive a $4,000 scholarship and each of the two finalists will receive $1,500 scholarships.Â

Jo Carol (Zellers) Murphy passed away due to complications from COVID-19 on Jan. 16 at Felicita Vida, Senior Community in Escondido, California.
Jo Carol was born in Los Angeles on Dec. 3, 1945, and moved to Santa Barbara when she was a child. She attended Mount Carmel Elementary School and Bishop Garcia Diego High School.
She married Tom Murphy and they raised three children: John, Lisa and Kimberly.

Jo Carol was a working mother, who always put her family first. She delighted in spending the holidays with family, while enjoying good food and traditions.
