The votes were taken on Wednesday night at a special called board meeting. According to the group’s website, the Alabama State FOP consists of 62 subordinate lodges with approximately 8,000 members.
Following the vote, FOP Lodge No. 1 attorney Liz Young cited a spike in violence throughout Birmingham since Smith’s three-year tenure began. See Young’s full statement below.
“The FOP Executive Board and the Board of Trustees unanimously voted in favor of a vote of no confidence for Chief Smith and Assistant Chief Davenport. Board members and I have attempted to resolve these issues with both the Chief and the Mayor for many months; however, no efforts have been made by either party to address our concerns.

The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) has earmarked $6 million to make security upgrades in its public housing sites.Â
Several children have lost lives in public housing over the past 24 months including four-year-old Jurnee Coleman; three-year-old Kamille âCupcakeâ McKinney, and two-year-old Major Turner.
âThey did not deserve to die and we owe it to them and their families and all existing families that reside in our public housing communities to do everything we can to keep them safe,â said Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin on Friday at a press conference attended by HABD President and CEO David A. Northern Sr. and Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith.
Who killed Major Turner? Someone knows, and they need to do the right thing, city leaders say
Updated Feb 19, 2021;
Two-year-old Major Turner died two weeks ago today, hours after he was gunned down in a close-knit, highly populated Birmingham housing community.
Since then, there have been prayers for the toddler and his family, tears for his life cut short and the family’s loss, outrage over the senseless, tragic killing. Candles have been lit, balloons released, and rewards offered.
What there hasn’t been, however, is someone, anyone, willing to step forward and give Birmingham police what they need to make an arrest in the case and bring some sort of closure, some sort of justice, to a grieving family, a grieving community.
