Council Member Jeff Cramerding was the lone "no" vote. "This city has got a terrible history of historic preservation," he said. "Today's vote was a huge step in the wrong direction."
With the sale and probable redevelopment of the building imminent, preservationists are pushing to make the contested Terrace Plaza Hotel a designated local landmark.
Mostly vacant since 2008, the building goes up for auction in May. Developers could invest between $60-90 million toward the site, but the proposed landmark designation would have limited what developers could do to the structure.
