WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. Federal investigators are assisting local authorities in investigating what caused a tanker train hauling crude oil to derail in Whatcom County Tuesday morning. There have been no reported injuries.
Cleanup continued Wednesday as crews work to clear the train cars, debris, and crude oil that leaked from the cars. Officials said it could take months to get the area fully cleaned up.

Dec. 22 A train has derailed and caught fire in the Custer area and residents and visitors within a half-mile were being evacuated, according to Whatcom County Public Works, the Whatcom County Sheriff s Office and Washington State Patrol.
The train, carrying crude oil, derailed around 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, in the Custer area, according to Courtney Wallace, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesperson. It is a BNSF train and track, Wallace said.
The train derailed near the 7500 block of Portal Way, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff s Office on Twitter. The sheriff s office is working on evacuating people within a half-mile of the derailment, the agency said.
Third pedestrian in last month dies after being struck on Whatcom County roadways

Dec. 15 A 27-year-old Blaine woman was the third pedestrian killed on Whatcom County roadways in the past month when she was struck Nov. 29 on Slater Road and later died.
Katrina J. Sampson was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle but later died, according to the Washington State Patrol release on the incident.
At approximately 5:12 p.m. Nov. 29, Sampson was eastbound on Slater Road near Lake Terrell Road when she was struck by a white 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, which also was eastbound on Slater, according to the release.
