Mass vaccination drive begins at 161 centres across the State A sanitation worker was given the first COVID-19 vaccine as the Odisha government began its mass vaccination drive at 161 centres across the State here on Saturday.
The worker identified as 51-year-old Biranchi Naik, who has been working at Capital Hospital for the past 30 years received a Covaxin jab.

BHUBANESWAR: Biranchi Naik, 51, a safai karmachari at Capital Hospital, took the first shot of Covid-19 vaccine on Saturday. He said he is happy that he can be an example for others, who will follow his step. After so many months when we find a vaccine that can defeat the deadly virus that killed lakhs of people and put the whole world in lockdown, I feel lucky and privileged to be the first person get the vaccine, said Biranchi, who works as a safai karmachari in Capital Hospital.
Biranchi said, the hospital authorities told him that he is the first person to get the first shot in the vaccination programme on Friday evening. I have full faith in what doctors told me still I was feeling a bit nervous. They said everyone will take the vaccine eventually and it is absolutely safe. My wife and son also supported me and boosted my confidence to get the first shot,” he added.

Odisha became the first state to halt the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive for a day. The Odisha administration decided not to conduct the coronavirus vaccination drive on January 17 to observe if those who received the COVID-19 vaccine on January 16 developed any complication from the jab.“We want to observe those who took the vaccine. From Monday, the vaccination drive will continue till all 3.28 lakh health workers are inoculated,” said Pradipta Mohapatra, Additional Chief Secretary (Health), Odisha, on January 16.
