[ technical difficulties ] that helped mastermind the worst terrorist attack on u.s. soil. and many other attacks against americans. ayman al zawahiri has killed by a cia drone strike this last weekend while standing on a balcony in downtown kabul. he was osama bin laden s deputy during the september 11th attacks and rose to al qaeda s leader when the u.s. killed bin laden back in 2011. a senior administration official told nbc news that the strike was so precise, none of his family inside of the home were killed. and in a prime time address, president biden called the killing justice for his victims. and the mission, quote, a total success. people around the world no longer need to fear the vicious and determined killer. the united states continues to demonstrate our resolve and our capacity to defend the american people against those who seek to do us harm. you know, we make it clear again tonight that no matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide. if you are a
proliferated and its intentions have not changed. and bin laden would not have been the force that he was, would he, without al zawahiri there. he had an extraordinarily important place in that organization. and actually was the brains of the operation, was he not? well, what he brought, initially was that he had a propagandaist and he had a lot of experience. but he also had an organization al jihad, in egypt, and bin laden didn t have an organization when they met. so, it was that group that became the inner core of al qaeda and al zawahiri and bin laden were very different men but they were similar in the fact they were techno crates. and bin laden worked for his father s construction company and zawahiri was a doctor.
it i saw this up close. it changed my life are. i ve been involved in national security and foreign policy because of 9/11. when i left the army, i stayed on top of it, i immersed myself in it. i m only on television because of that commitment to keep america safe. but i am concerned about going forward and as are other people in the military and in our intelligence services. we have the wherewithal to still deal with this. what we need is vigilance and the kind of resolve and determination that was reflected on 9/11. it was absolutely amazing. as you mentioned, bill, the national resolve and resiliency that this country displayed, ma bin laden didn t osama bin laden didn t understand america. he thought this would crush america. that s why he attacked our symbol, our economy, our military strength, democracy at the capitol which failed, of course. he thought we d be crushed bit. little did he know that we would
i refuse to take att s orders or bin laden s, i will not stay quiet in the war. how do you feel? i read this piece, it is a powerful piece. that said, there s a misunderstanding here. bin laden didn t try to bring us into a never ending war. this is what he said after 9/11 when he realized that the attack backfired. his goal was to push us out of the middle east, not bring us further in. since 9/11, we are move involved in the middle east than anytime in our history. and president trump i think made the right decision when he said i changed my mind about afghanistan. anything worse than being in afghanistan, it is leaving afghanistan. we have run the videotape many times before, president obama did it at the end of 2011 in iraq, into the vacuum that was created came isis. look, it is not a great situation to be in. we have to manage and contain this threat. it is not going away. if we take our eye on the ball
this is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the united states. and many of these nations owe massive amounts of money from past years. and not paying in those past years. over the last 8 years, the united states spent more in defense than all other nato countries combined. if nato countries made their full and complete contributions, then nato would be even stronger than it is today, especially from the threat of terrorism. brian: to the tune of $100 million. didn t see the cut away of the luxenberg leader leaning over to the french leader and making a smug remark about the president think it s a big joke is he calling them out. ainsley: if there is a time for him to be blunt and candid, this is it. he is trying to make the art of the deal. calling them out face to face. steve: everybody has to pay 2% of their g.d.p. look at france, they pay under
