Nominated twice for the pulitzer prize. The author of i think one of the great books about the civil war, america which was in the library a few years ago talking about it and talking about the importance of the evangelical religion in american politics leading up to the civil war and in some senses, the decline of evangelical religion, certainly the righteousness of evangelical religion after the civil war in the beginning of postreconstruction era and jim crow. It is i think a great book that refrains from what we have thought about the civil war and what we thought about race and religion in america. In a sense, you get his generation whose new book, when government was good is the subtitle. It may seem like a distant path for some of us today. We phrased also the conversation about the place of government in American History and particularly executiveleadership.
