Mayor TenHaken announces hiring panel for next police chief By Todd Epp May 10, 2021 | 3:41 PM SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) Mayor Paul TenHaken has established a hiring panel for a new Police Chief. In April current Police Chief Matt Burns announced his plans to retire on July 23, 2021, after 25 years of service with the Sioux Falls Police Department (SFPD).   The panel consists of seven people, including partner organizations that work closely with the SFPD and community members who have ties in various ways to law enforcement. The hiring panel will consist of Erica Beck, Chief of Staff, City of Sioux Falls; Bill O’Toole, Human Resources Director, City of Sioux Falls; Michelle Boyd, Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office; Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent, Sioux Falls School District; David Jal, Community Ambassador Program; Jessie Schmidt, South Dakota State Director of the Better Business Bureau; and Arthur McCray, CEO, ADVIE. City insurance now covers legal defense if mayor, councilors face ethics violation © Joe Ahlquist / Argus Leader Carnegie Town Hall Several members of the Sioux Falls City Council are raising concerns about a new addition to the city s insurance policy that would provide legal representation for councilors accused of ethics violations. The new general endorsement adds coverage related to ethics complaints against the Sioux Falls mayor or any of its city councilors – providing legal expenses of up to $10,000 per occurrence with $20,000 aggregate per coverage term, at a cost to the city of $7,500. The coverage was newly available to any city with an ethics policy or ordinance, said Bill O Toole, the city s human resources director. If accused of an ethics violation, the person in question would contact officials with the human resources office, who would put them in touch with the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance.
