Alumni Corner: Paul Boutilier The former Islander defenseman and Stanley Cup champion has spent recent years coaching by Sasha Kandrach @KandrachSasha / NewYorkIslanders.com It may be nearly 40 years since Paul Boutilier dressed in a game for the New York Islanders, but even so, the former Islanders defenseman and member of the 1983 Stanley Cup-winning team has still found relevance and value in some of the lessons that he learned during his time on the Island.  Now, he s made it his mission to imprint those foundations on the next generation of hockey players that he works with as a personal coach and mentor.

Austin American-Statesman Letters to the editor: February 8, 2021

I celebrate the plea by Luis Figueroa of Every Texan to fight for Medicaid expansion, driven by compassion and hard-eyed fiscal common sense. At the same time, Every Texan could more effectively live up to its name by also demanding health care for, uh, every Texan. How? By urging Congress members across Texas to sign on to single-payer universal health care, Medicare for All. The Congressional Budget Office recently determined that Medicare for All could save our nation as much as $650 billion a year.  Nine percent of the U.S. population lives in Texas. Roughly, then, based on the CBO s findings Texans could see $58 billion of net cost savings, right back in our pocket.

Maven s Memories: The Sutter Brothers Road to the Islanders

Maven s Memories: The Sutter Brothers Road to the Islanders From farm to Islanders, Duane and Brent Sutter s path from Alberta to Long Island by Stan Fischler @StanFischler / NewYorkIslanders.com A pair of hockey words are synonymous Sutter and hustle. Three words at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum also were synonymous: Duane, Brent and Hustle.  That s Duane and Brent Sutter, of course.  Without fear of contradiction, I called them The Hustle Brothers. That s based on their collective contributions to four Stanley Cups and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Not to mention the oodles of thrills they delivered, over and over again. We were lucky to have not one but two guys from the Sutter family, said Jim Devellano, Bill Torrey s chief scout; now executive vice president of the Detroit Red Wing
