AN investigation has been launched into a major fire which took place in the Barrow town centre. Seven fire crews were called to a building in Barrow’s Duke Street on Thursday, spending two hours tackling the blaze which had spread through the unused building. Smoke was seen coming from the rear of the building, which houses the disused Antalya takeaway at the front. People in the neighbouring buildings and businesses were told to evacuate in case smoke spread, station manager Roger Exley said. The fire boss, who described the incident as ‘high risk’, said a blaze had started in the ground floor and burnt upwards to the first floor.
A number of properties in Barrow were targeted last week, leading police to open several investigations. A home in Dalton Lane was burgled at approximately 11am on Wednesday. Police are searching for a man described as white, aged in his mid-40s, approximately 5ft 6 inches tall, of stocky build with short receding light hair. He was also seen carrying a small cardboard box at the time of the burglary. The man was wearing dark trousers and a light coloured shirt, possibly blue. Police would like to speak to this man or anyone who witnessed him in the area of Dalton Lane between 11am and 12pm on Wednesday.

Neighbours reported witnessed a party ‘upwards of 50 people’ taking place in the quarry on Saturday evening. Although the event broke Covid-19 restrictions, one reader has sympathised with the group. They said: “Illegal party? I think [it is] more a group of teens sat chilling out of the way from housing and people? Sorry but [what] harm are they really doing? If they stand around they get moved on! “If they clean up after themselves and aren’t causing any harm I don’t see the issue at all, and I’m sure they won’t be the first or the last. maybe they’re making some memories seeing as though a year of their teens has been locked up in the house.
