The New York Times has fired a prize-winning reporter, Donald McNeil, for asking about the context in which someone used the N word. As journalist Jesse Singal notes, “One of the most important coronavirus reporters on the planet” was forced out of “the
Times because he used the N-word in the context of asking about a controversy involving the N-word.”
The Timesstated, “We do not tolerate racist language regardless of intent.” But as investigative reporter Bill Dedman points out,
The Times itself has used this supposedly “racist language” the N word many times: “The word in question has been published in The Times as recently as: November 4, 2020”; “November 7, 2020”; “November 15, 2020 ; “November 25, 2020”; “November 29, 2020”; “December 28, 2020”; and “February 7, 2021.”
