to conduct a trial without the facts is saying we re afraid. we have something to hide. to conduct a trial without relevant witnesses, who haven t been heard from. to just rehash the evidence presented in the house just doesn t make any sense. if leader mcconnell doesn t hold a full and fair trial, the american people will, rightly, ask what are you, leader mcconnell, and what is president trump hiding? senator schumer already laid out in a letter to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell how he suggests handling an impeachment trial. schumer proposed the senate subpoena four witnesses, who ignored house subpoenas, including acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney. and former national security advisor john bolton. schumer also proposed subpoenaing documents from the trump administration s decision to delay the military assistance to ukraine. of course, the trial in the senate depends on wednesday s
he limited it to these people and not the entire universe of witnesses that he could have pulled from because he was trying to suggest that this proposal is entirely reasonable. and that matters because he s trying to get enough republican support to, effectively, force mitch mcconnell to have no choice but to call for the kind of trial that schumer, himself, is envisioning. so when this entire process reaches the senate, there are a couple of numbers you re going to hear a lot. and one is 67, right? that s the supermajority. the number of senators you need to effectively remove president trump from office. but 51. that s the simple majority. that s the number of senators you need to get behind a resolution. to basically establish the rules of the road. republicans have a slim majority. it s a 53-47 split. so if mcconnell can keep his 53 intact, then he can ignore schumer altogether and just keep it moving. but if assumer is able to pick
law and and take credit for doing so successfully. but president trump has continued to find ways to try to undermine the law. he s doing that now. and i think that will be a big issue in the election season coming up. andy, good to see you. thank you for joining us. andy slavitt, former acting administrator. coming up next, i m joined by congressman joseph moral, as the house gets ready to vote on articles of impeachment and senate democrats call for an evidentiary trial. plus, why president trump could be facing an uphill battle for re-election in several of the crucial swing states that helped him to get to the white house in 2016. you are watching msnbc. it s tough to quit smoking cold turkey. so chantix can help you quit slow turkey. along with support, chantix is proven to help you quit.
