The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed petitions by the 11 men - who were convicted of raping Bilkis Bano, and murdering her family, during the 2002 Godhra riots - seeking more time before they surrender to the authorities and are sent back to jail.
One of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang rape case, Govindhbhai Nai, has moved the Supreme Court seeking four weeks time to surrender before the concerned jail authorities.
A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan orally stated that the opportunity to reform and reintegrate into society should be given to every eligible convict and not just a few.
The Court was considering a batch of pleas challenging the decision of the Gujarat government to grant remission to 11 convicts who had gang-raped Bilkis Bano and murdered her family members during 2002 Gujarat riots.
