Norwalk works on pedestrian improvements as activist pleads for East Avenue

City hopes for $18.6M from feds Marks left on an East Avenue sidewalk after an April 7 single car accident. (Contributed by Bradford Craighead) NORWALK, Conn. No one was hurt when a car ran off East Avenue, right over the sidewalk and into somebody’s yard, but a local activist contends last week’s accident shows just how badly pedestrian improvements are needed in the area around the town green. “While I was alarmed by the fact that a car could so easily and crazy/dangerously run up off East Avenue and over the sidewalk and end up on the front lawn at my neighbor’s building… I was secretly almost delighted that such an event would occur with Police fanfare / action because we have worked so hard on trying to get the City to address this particular section of the EA corridor,” Bradford Craighead wrote in an email to NancyOnNorwalk.

Meyer-Mitchell resigns from Norwalk BoE

NORWALK, Conn. Barbara Meyer-Mitchell has resigned from the Board of Education, effective Friday. Meyer-Mitchell was first elected in 2017 and is leaving eight months ahead of the end of her term. The Democrat has said in an op-edthat she is leaving to focus on her two children after helping Norwalk Public Schools make “significant progress” during her 3+ years on the Board. “The cost of service is high, with many evenings spent away from family. While I have been operating as if I have 11,683 children, I need to focus on the two that are mine for a bit,” Meyer-Mitchell wrote. Board of Education Chairman Colin Hosten noted the resignation at Thursday’s Finance Committee meeting, saying that Meyer-Mitchell had examined the priorities in her life and decided to move on.

Leaving the Norwalk Board of Education, after making significant progress

Barbara Meyer-Mitchell. It has been an honor to serve on the Norwalk Board of Education and celebrate and support the success of our students and staff.  Ensuring that Norwalk Public Schools have been appropriately resourced has been the work of a full decade of my life. My children first attended meetings to advocate for better ECS funding when they were 4 and 6! When I ran for the Board of Education there were a few core areas I wanted to impact, and we have made significant progress in these areas.  First, I wanted to be part of the solution to the ongoing special education issues that had been documented through the multiple CREC reports. While there is more work to do, Norwalk Public Schools has made important improvement in this area by increasing staffing to better support our students and meet our caseload, creating effective new in-district programs to alleviate expensive outplacement, and by ensuring better compliance and reduced legal costs. Second, I wanted to ensure
