The government also explained that since another 10% EWS quota is in effect under provisions of separate Act, and is not part of the current bill, the total quota limit would effectively be up to 75% now, leaving 25% unreserved.
The Bihar assembly passed bills to increase reservation for deprived castes in state government jobs and educational institutions from 50% to 65%, bringing the overall reservation to 75%. The bills received unanimous approval, with the quota for Scheduled Tribes doubled from 1% to 2%, and for Scheduled Castes raised from 16% to 20%.
The proposed Bill is likely to lay provision of 18 per cent quota to OBCs, 25 per cent to EBCs, 20 per cent to scheduled caste and two per cent to scheduled tribes besides existing 10 per cent EWS quota.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has proposed increasing quota for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, as well Other Backward Classes and Extremely Backward Classes, to 65 per cent.
