Take flight at Jack Polson Field with the Burlington Model Aviation Club
Southeast Iowans can find their inner pilot with the Burlington Model Airplane Club at Jack Polson Field.
For more than 70 years, aviation enthusiasts have been piloting model aircraft such as helicopters, planes and, more recently, drones from the runway of Jack Polson Field, which is located within the boundaries of Big Hollow Recreation Area in Sperry. It s a hobbyist club, enthusiastic about helicopters, airplanes (and) drones, explained Ted Francis, treasurer of the model airplane club.
Flying is a wide-ranging hobby and it is not unheard of to see retired Army personnel, members of Congress and children interested in flying model aircraft. Indeed, the American Model Aeronautics Association provides scholarships for students interested in aeronautical engineering.
