The creator of Rhode Island s iconic Big Blue Bug has died.
George Cardono, who started advertising agencies in Providence and New York, died Tuesday at the age of 88, according to his obituary.
The giant bug, which advertises Big Blue Bug Solutions off Route 95 in Providence, was born out of a 1979 brainstorming session between company founder Leonard Goldman, his son Steve and their outside advertising man Cardono, according to a 2012 column by The Journal s Mark Patinkin.
Wanting the company s advertisement to stand out from the billboards on Route 95, Steve came up with the idea for a bug, according to Patinkin. The others loved the idea, settled on a termite, and Cardono was tasked with pulling it together, Patinkin wrote.
