you want experts. he has the experience because he has been in a businessman engaged raaround the world. he has been a candidate. you notice a trend. you go and put them in a very important job. when that person lands with the big american flag, you are speaking for the president and represent millions of voters. donald trump holds grudges. they have the authority having opposed him in the past. i think that is a can is key. romney s name is out there. nikki haley to the u.n. they both opposed him. i m sure romney is thinking how much influence will i have if i m offered and i join. that is something we have to wait and see. it is a good signal he is willing to reach out beyond those that supported him. he hasn t placed a lot of emphasis on expertise in any of the posts. that is something that is
campaign event. you ve about got the stage, big american flag, campaign music, lots of romney supporters. but you also have over here canned goods and supplies that people have brought for victims of the storm. the storm put romney in a bind. while the president can lead relief efforts this is something heartbreaking for the nation. reporter: there s not much for romney to do beyond encouraging supporters to pitch in. and with fema working overtime, democrats are hammering him for what he said at a debate when asked if some of fema s responsibilities should be turned over to the states. absolutely. anytime you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that s the right direction. and if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that s even better. reporter: romney wouldn t answer questions about that. governor, would you eliminate fema if you were president? reporter: even with all the canceled even
and, chris, this is something a lot of republicans don t like talking about because they have a party, frankly, like democrats do, too, that has a very odd coalition. they ve got the auto mechanics and they have the bond traders. and everything in between. so this is an awkward topic. but it s come to life here in the last few weeks. starting in south carolina and on display in south carolina. you go to romney event and you see folks that represent upper middle class and upper class america. that is who is really into romney. it s revealed in the exit polls. look at the states where romney does the best. it s among the highest income folks and those with the most education. conversely you go to other events and you are seeing folks wearing jeans, big american flag t-shirts who are carrying tea party flags who are sporting fanny packs at times. where you see this oftentimes in democratic primaries.
in, and then we bring them to you. you can see the dow, of course, we re keeping a close eye on the dow. we did get some good news today saying that the u.s. economic outlook is good, but the dow down about 62 points. and over there at 211, you ll see ed henry who is standing by in iowa where pram ha s bus president obama s bus tour through the u.s. is continuing today. ed, what s going on? reporter: interesting because the president made a little news last night at an earlier stop in iowa, they say this is not an official campaign tour, but it certainly looks like it. he was standing in front of a barn, big american flag and then got into sort of trying out some campaign rhetoric into next year s run. and the bottom line is he said that he will in early september be unveiling a new economic plan, some details on the table. and he says if republicans on capitol hill block this, he is going to be running against,
and the rnc in that column, too. we ll talk about steve bannon with peter king from new york who graciously agreed to join us on the show. he tweeted that the gop must do the right thing and dump steve bannon. what do you mean by that? and isn t that not your call to make? well, listen, i m a voice within the republican party. more important than that, i m an american. and i was not putting that out as a political tweet. it was governmental. i don t think steve bannon adds anything positive at all to the dialogue in the country. i don t know who can identify with him. and to see him on the stage this week with a big american flag behind him, he looked like a disseveraled drunk that wandered off the face. for him to be a major voice in politics is wrong. we should shut him, we should cut him off. i would say this whether he was a democrat or republican. i don t see what he adds to he encourages racial division. again, with the charges against roy moore, there s no way of knowing whe
