It wasn t always this elaborate.
Ann Mathis and her husband, Moses Mathis, just wanted to help the neighborhood kids in Tiffany Pines when this all started in 1990. In their backyard, they collected bikes, dispersing them to those in need.
What started with seventy-five turned into 27,000, she said Saturday, now sitting on a red mobility cart in a warehouse full of volunteers and close to 1,000 more bikes to give away that day. Her organization, the Bicycle Man Community Outreach Project, has given more than 30,000 of Fayetteville s kids a bike since then, according to a news release.
And a pandemic wasn t going to stop the mission this year at least not for long.
