i think that s what we saw in the beautiful set of remarks that he gave, and he certainly landed a pretty big punch in the comparison of foreign terrorists to domestic terrorists, but it was a message that the country needed to hear, and a message of not tolerating what s happening in the republican party and the incitement of base instinct with political gain among too many gop politicians, and i just thought it was beautiful the way that the president reminded us that we have so much to be hopeful for and that we can be better than what we have been in recent days. and, donnie, speaking of what some of the republican party are doing right now, of course, we could talk about january 6th and the fact that you have most republicans trying to block a transparent investigation of january the 6th, and
oftentimes the input of members of congress. i told you he had breaking news, information from richard burr. so the chair of the senate intel committee tells you that the leaks, which is what the white house wants investigated right now, the leaks will not be part of the investigation right now from that committee? reporter: yeah, they do not see that as part of their purview. and also, right after i talked to burr, i talked to john cornyn, i asked him about that as well because he sits on the intelligence committee. he also thinks this is something the fbi should look at, because if anything was leaked and it was classified material that was leaked, that could break the law, he does not believe that s something they should do in congress, he believes that s a fbi issue, a law enforcement issue. they don t view that as something that s part of their purview. but it comes also as some house members are calling for investigations into the leaks. so a bit of a split between senate rep
served by fully cooperating with that investigation, the bipartisan, bicameral investigation. look, i agree, we shouldn t have an investigation by leaks. but this isn t a president who is on the high moral ground here. this is a president who professed a fondness for wikileaks, who encouraged the russians to hack mrs. clinton. so he wants to talk about this, i ll be glad to do it, we ll be glad to cooperate with the administration. but they have to get past the issue of leaks and get into the issue at hand, which is the russian involvement with the democratic process. your republican colleagues in the house of representatives including the chair of the oversight committee, chair of the judiciary committee, they say they want the focus to be on the leaks and not the substance of the reported contacts between the trump campaign and russian officials. do you think your republican colleagues in the house are trying to protect or shield the president? look, chairman nunez, i ve
attack the intelligence community, and to stall on any sort of cooperation. i think that pressure coming from the public will push the republicans to understand what they have to do to follow the public s lead and get the truth out there. we ve heard on this show yesterday from both republicans and democrats who want to see the transcript of the conversation between michael flynn and the russian ambassador released. would you like to see that made public, sir? oh, absolutely. i mean, at the very least, right now the gang of eight doesn t have it, and the intelligence committees don t have it. and the congress doesn t have it as a whole. so i mean, the requests have been made. i do think eventually this will get out. the transcripts are absolutely essential. what took place, what was said between the general and the russian ambassador. again, the trump administration has to get beyond this. and fighting us at every turn, they must agree to fully cooperate with the investigation and
their campaign and in their administration to tell us exactly what was said, what were the communications, what if any promises were made with the russians. you said you haven t seen transcripts, which is interesting because you sit on the intelligence committee. have you been getting the cooperation you want, to find out the information you want? at this point the investigation is under way. at this point i m satisfied with the information we re getting. i m concerned that this will be slowed at some point in time. my concern is, on this issue and many others, this country is facing what could be a constitutional crisis. i have faith that the process will move forward. but i do think the american public needs to encourage its lawmakers to follow these facts and make sure there s no stonewalling, on either side of the aisle or in the white house. congressman mike quigley of illinois, nice to have you on, thanks. thank you. still to come, the full
