From T-90 tanks and BMP-II infantry combat vehicles rumbling down Rajpath to fighter jets performing some breathtaking manoeuvres in the skies to flaunting indigenous rockets and missiles, India on January 26 showcased its military might to the world during the 72nd Republic Day parade held at a time when India and China are locked in a border standoff in the Ladakh sector.
Military equipment displayed at the parade included the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Pinaka multi-launcher rocket system, bridge layer tank T-72, Samvijay electronic warfare system and Schilka weapon system.
The Indian Air Force’s Rafales, Sukhoi-30s and MiG-29s fighters that are part of the IAF’s muscular posture in the Ladakh theatre were among the 42 aircraft that took part in the Republic Day flypast, which is the highlight of the parade. The Rafale jets took part in the parade for the first time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, in his monthly radio address - Mann Ki Baat, hailed four women pilots of Air India who created history by completing the national carrier s longest flight from San Francisco to Bengaluru. Dear countrymen, you would have heard a few days back that four women pilots commanded a direct flight from San Fransisco in the US to Bengaluru. The flight, covering a distance of over 10,000 kilometre, brought over 225 people to India, said the Prime Minister in his first radio address, Mann ki Baat, of 2021.

The Republic Day celebrations started with Prime Minister Narendra Modi s visit to the National War Memorial on Tuesday morning. PM Modi led the nation in paying tribute to the heroes of India who gave their lives for the country. The National Flag was unfurled by President Ram Nath Kovind, the supreme commander of the armed forces. It was followed by the National Anthem. The Republic Day parade was led by Parade Commander, Lieutenant General Vijay Kumar Mishra, Ati Vishisth Seva medal, General Officer Commanding Delhi Area. Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth will be the first woman fighter pilot to take part in the Republic Day parade tomorrow.
NEW DELHI: Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth is set to be the first woman fighter pilot to take part in the Republic Day parade. Kanth will be part of the IAF’s tableau that will showcase mock-ups of indigenously-manufactured Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, Light Combat Helicopter Rudra, Rohini radars, and BrahMos.
Kanth flies MiG-21 Bison fighter plane. In 2016, she became one of the first three women to be commissioned as fighter pilots in the IAF.
The 28-year-old was born in Bihar s Darbhanga district, and completed her schooling from Barauni Refinery DAV Public School. She is also a trained engineer. She pursued a Bachelor s in Medical Electronics from BMS College of Engineering in Bengaluru.
