2004. dayton, ohio. 75-year-old betty haislip is driving her pt cruiser east on third street. 41-year-old albertina hughey is driving her subaru north on ed win c. moses boulevard. 42-year-old scott tegtmeyer is calmly crossing the intersection. the next 12 seconds changed three lives. that moment is captured by a red light enforcement camera. it was recently installed by dayton police to reduce crashes caused by drivers ignoring traffic signals. i was driving my subaru forester and i was probably going about 35 when i approached the intersection. i looked up and i actually saw a man crossing the street, but we made eye contact and it was clear that he was going to, you know, get to the other side before i entered the intersection. then a pt cruiser comes out of nowhere.
they covered him up and went to the other two ladies. neither betty haislip, who was driving the pt cruiser, nor hughew have any life-threatening injuries. i think i ended up with about 66 stitches all over between my legs, my hands, and my face. the internal bleeding was a bit of a concern, but once they discovered that it was just the multiple cuts to the liver, doctors said that i could allow that to heal naturally. but tegtmeyer isn t as lucky. the guy that was out here, he was mangled pretty bad and bleeding from just about everywhere. and then something remarkable happens. evidently somebody detected a small pulse in his leg and said, this man is not dead, he is alive. tegtmeyer is rushed to the hospital, and his family is

that s what the steel plates for, give the bones something to grow back to. according to what they say. they didn t think i d ever walk again. after four years of therapy, scott tegtmeyer beat the odds again. he s walking. but still there are injuries he feels daily. pains aches, pops, cracks. with weather changes all the time. i m off in my balance and still can t taste or smell. and my hearing is down. he was a tiger. to endure that. come out of it and not be hateful to anybody. the driver of the pt cruiser, betty haislip, was charged with running a red light. as for scott and albertina, they re just happy to be alive. i was alive, and that was enough for me. i m lucky to be here. i thank the lord every day.
