Asian seniors get self-defense training to protect against attacks
KTVU s Brooks Jarosz reports.
SAN CARLOS, Calif. - With increasing attacks and hate crimes against the AAPI community, groups of Bay Area Asian seniors are taking classes to get hands-on training to protect themselves.
Self-defense and law enforcement instructors offered their expert advice in hopes of preventing future crimes, by arming those 65 and older with new tools – like pepper spray and personal alarms to stop new attacks. Merely being aware of your surroundings will not protect you, retired Oakland Police Capt. Frank Lowe said. You should have some type of action already ready in your mind.

It’s the most sought-after test for any prospective skilled immigration applicant in Canada at the moment and Braxton Rayan is racing against time to secure the earliest spot possible.
With 90,000 spots up for grabs under a new one-time special program offering a pathway to permanent residence, international graduates and essential migrant workers see what they feel is the best chance to make their immigration dreams come true.
However, to qualify, they must meet the language-proficiency requirement and many are now scrambling to book one of the two mandatory language tests CELPIP and IELTS as soon as possible amid the third wave of COVID-19, when spaces at test centres are limited.
In a written statement to
CIC News, Betty Chan, Vice President of Operations explained “…our team has worked tirelessly with our test centre partners to increase availability and to stabilize our systems for an improved registration experience. We are proud that our centralized operations have allowed us to quickly respond to help thousands of hopeful permanent residents secure a test in the past week. With thousands more seats made available earlier today for sittings through until the end of May, we hope to help thousands more. We are committed to adding test sittings in June and beyond, and we strive for equitable distribution across the country.”
Essential workers, international graduates, and other immigration candidates currently living in Canada now have the ability to book their language tests again.
Those looking to apply for an economic class immigration program in Canada need to take a General test provided by either IELTS or CELPIP.
Both IELTS and CELPIP saw their websites crash on April 15 after Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced Canada would enable some 90,000 essential workers, international graduates, and francophones in Canada to apply for permanent residence through six new limited-time immigration programs. The programs launch on May 6 and close on November 5, or when application caps for the programs are reached.
