George Henry Bell, 94, of New Haven

Wed, 04/14/2021 - 6:01pm sarahp GEORGE HENRY BELL NEW HAVEN George Henry Bell, age 94, of New Haven, passed away peacefully at home on April 8, 2021, following a diagnosis of cancer, surrounded by his loving family.  George was born in Green River, Vt., on Dec. 13, 1926, son to Bertha (Knight) Gates and his stepfather Carl E. Gates. George was raised in Addison County, living in Bridport and Middlebury. As a child, he was involved in 4-H and the Future Farmers of America, winning several awards for his immaculate care of his cows. Following high school, he worked on the Middlebury College Farm. George met his wife Betty (Rivers) Bell at the Rutland roller rink, marrying on July 4, 1950. After marrying he worked as a herdsman at Beaver Brook Farm in Wilmington, Vt. and Rosewall Farm in New Hampshire.

CAF Dedicates P-63 Kingcobra to Real Rosie The Riveter CAF Dedicates P-63 Kingcobra to Real Rosie The Riveter By Steve Forsyth, CAF Dixie Wing Public Information Officer Betty Bishop could never have known that her WWII aircraft factory work when she was 18 would bring her a hero’s honor in 2020. Surrounded by a small crowd and numerous cameras, Betty watched in November as the Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing unveiled the nose of its restored P-63 Kingcobra, with yellow paint exclaiming the aircraft’s new name, “Miss Betty.” Betty’s story started in 1943 when she joined the ranks of the burgeoning population of Rosie the Riveters, the thousands of women who filled the workforce in shipyards and factories to power the United States’ Arsenal of Democracy.
