As fears build following a stark rise in anti-Asian attacks largely targeting senior citizens, many are wondering what they can do to stamp out the violence. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Better Tomorrow Speaker Series will host a live online conversation with author and activist Helen Zia, one of the country’s most prominent Asian-American voices against hate and homophobia.
The livestream conversation, “The Long Road to Atlanta: Anti-Asian Racism and Misogyny,” will be held on Monday, April 12, at 4 p.m.
“The University of Hawaiʻi is deeply troubled by recent acts of violence and discrimination,” said
COVID-19 pandemic response, was one of the panelists. As one of the
UH leads working with the Hawaiʻi Department of Health (
DOH) on vaccination plans, she addressed questions related to vaccine availability to the
UH community. She emphasized two factors: How many vaccine doses the state receives every week and the complex logistics of getting shots into arms safely.
“We are working with the
DOH to determine what opportunities make the most sense to deliver vaccines to the
UH population. Vaccination options will also likely vary by county,” she said. “We are moving forward together, as a state, and as the university and others really work hard to address this pandemic.”
“ Vivek Murthy is a voice of experience, integrity and compassion,” noted
UH Mānoa Provost
Michael Bruno, who spent time with the former surgeon general when he served as
UH Mānoa commencement speaker in 2017. “We welcome his leadership to address this ongoing public health emergency.”
