What s next for new Alstom rail car facility?

Start with moving a whole lot of earth, both above the ground and below.  The City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency this week continued to set the foundation for a new 135,000 square foot rail car manufacturing facility on Shawmut Drive, applying for a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) to offset some costs associated with the project.  The IDA previously secured a $689,000 loan from the Regional Economic Development and Energy Corporation (REDEC) to make the land in the Shawmut Industrial Park “site ready” for development. The IDA took on the project anticipating Alstom would be awarded a contract by Metra to supply a new fleet of rail cars for the Chicago metropolitan area. That foresight was rewarded earlier this year when Alstom won the contract and moved forward with plans for a new car shell manufacturing facility based in Hornell.

Hornell s Canisteo Street bridge being replaced in 2021

HORNELL “It’s time,” said Hornell Public Works Superintendent Mitch Cornish.  For the last 15 years or so, DPW has been making small fixes to make the Canisteo Street bridge “passable,” extending the bridge’s lifespan.  The small repairs were no longer sufficient last year, when the bridge was red-flagged by the Department of Transportation. The girders that hold up the bridge were deemed unsafe enough to support daily traffic, and the bridge was closed in June. The bridge remains closed today, but a plan is in place to get motorists and pedestrians traveling over Crosby Creek once again later this year.

Hornell aims to address traffic troubles at Rt 36 and Bethesda Drive

HORNELL More traffic is a good thing for the City of Hornell.  More traffic generally means a growing population, which reflects ample industry, jobs and opportunity in the Canisteo Valley.  But it also comes with a downside.  More accidents.  As the Hornell economy has picked up steam in recent years, anchored by Alstom and related industries, traffic on Route 36 through the city has also increased. A trouble spot has emerged at 36 and Bethesda Drive, which has witnessed accidents with growing frequency.  “You’re seeing more and more traffic as the city grows, as industry and the economy grows. You’re seeing more people and more vehicles,” said Mayor John Buckley. “Unfortunately it seems like we’ve had a lot of accidents up on the intersection of Route 36 and Bethesda Drive recently.”
