Amira Young breaks 46-year-old Gophers record in 200-meter run

Copy shortlink: The Gophers Amira Young, a junior from Chicago, won the 200-meter run in 23.21 seconds on Friday in the M City Classic Minnesota s lone home track and field meet this season. Her time broke the program record of 23.44 set by Jane Oas in 1975. Teammate Bethany Hasz won the 5,000 in 15:41.8, lowering her own program record in that event. Other women s winners on the first day of the four-team meet against Illinois, Nebraska and Wisconsin were Abigail Schaaffe in the 400 hurdles (58.43) and Allison Gerads in the long jump (20 feet, 3 inches). On the men s side, Noah Burton of the Gophers won the 400 hurdles (51.38), Owen Hoeft the 1,500 (3:44.20), Yahya Madar the high jump (6-4¼), Kaleb Siekmeier the discus (187-3), and Kostas Zaltos the hammer throw (228-3).

Amber Fiser pitched nine innings, threw 156 pitches and got the win; she is 8-4. The fifth-year righthander gave up two runs and six hits and struck out 12 for Minnesota (16-5). Autumn Pease pitched the 10th for her fourth save this season. The conference-leading Wildcats (18-3) scored two runs in the sixth to tie it. Natalie DenHartog hit her seventh homer for the Gophers in the third inning, and MaKenna Partain hit her first in the fifth.

It was the highest NCAA team finish in program history. Minnesota scored 239 points, marking the seventh top-12 team finish in program history and just the fourth top-10 finish for the Gophers women at the NCAA national meet, dating to 1983. Minnesota s previous best finish saw the Gophers come in ninth in the team standings in 2005. At the 2019 championships, the Gophers were 28th. I knew that what we did at the Big Ten meet at the end of January was just the tip of the iceberg of what we would be capable of six weeks later, Gophers coach Sarah Hopkins said.
