MESILLA – The Mesilla Marshals Department found multiple firearms and a large bag of narcotics inside a vehicle stopped for a broken headlight, Wednesday.  Driver Angel Garcia De Leon was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on charges from an outstanding warrant of receiving stolen property between $250 to $2,500, and receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle. Charges are pending pertaining to the items found in his vehicle, authorities said.

Camerata Del Sol offering COVID-19 safe concerts for Lent and Easter Bethany Freudenthal, Las Cruces Sun-News Camerata del Sol Chamber Orchestra performs at Good Samaritan Society in Las Cruces Replay Video UP NEXT LAS CRUCES - Camerata Del Sol is offering COVID-19 safe driveway serenades this year for Lent and Easter, and they ll also be touring at area churches. The 20-minute programs feature a string quartet and renowned soprano Heather Dials, who lives in Las Cruces.  Executive Director Amalia Zeitlin said the group normally performs a Lent concert, but because of the pandemic, venues are unable to host concerts. That s OK though, because one of the nonprofit organization s missions is to make chamber music more accessible to the the community.

Doña Ana County detention officer sues over COVID-19 vaccine mandate Algernon D Ammassa, Las Cruces Sun-News The FDA says Johnson & Johnson s COVID vaccine is safe for public use Replay Video UP NEXT LAS CRUCES – A Doña Ana County Detention Center officer facing termination for declining a COVID-19 vaccination is suing county manager Fernando Macias and detention center officials over the mandate.  The complaint stems from a directive Macias issued in January requiring that county-employed first responders, sheriff s deputies, firefighters and detention center officers receive one of the two vaccines against the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the disease.  Detention officer Isaac Legareta claims in a federal complaint that mandating employees take vaccines that are not yet fully approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration violates the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico House passed a $7.39 billion budget Wednesday, Feb. 24, that would increase spending by 4.6 percent, with much of that going to schools, health care and state employees. After moving through the House Finance and Appropriations Committee on a unanimous vote, House Bill 2 passed the House on a 60-10 vote. Republicans who opposed the bill questioned some of the increases, but praised the process led by Committee Chair Rep. Patricia Lundstrom, D-Gallup.
