A Black Pastor Received a Horrifyingly Racist Letter When He Announced He Was Leaving the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention

Pastor Dwight McKissic of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas has a long history of fiercely opposing strains of white nationalism that have poisoned the Southern Baptist Convention. He’s been a vocal critic of a recent statement from the SBC’s White seminary presidents that condemned Critical Race Theory as incompatible with SBC doctrine, and announced that his church would be leaving the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention over its inaction on racist sentiment within the convention. Now, he’s revealed a shockingly racist letter he received from John V. Rutledge after announcing his church’s decision to cut ties.
On January 20, history was made with the 2021 Presidential Inauguration.
Joe Biden became the oldest president. Dr Jill Biden became the first First Lady who is expected to continue with a paid job during her role. Kamala Harris became the first woman, Black woman and Asian-American to become Vice President. Doug Emhoff became the first Second Gentleman. And, 22-year-old Amanda Gorman became the youngest person to deliver the inauguration poem.
With all these firsts, combined with the turbulent state of US politics in recent months, even
weeks, it was a hopeful day. A happy day.

On Wednesday 6
th January – Epiphany – Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building, forcing the suspension of a joint session of Congress to certify Joe Biden’s electoral victory. Protestors made it to the senate floor and it took the police almost four hours to secure the building. One protestor was shot dead inside the building and three others died from “medical emergencies” over the course of the protests, according to police.
World leaders respond
World leaders were quick to condemn the horror unfolding in Washington. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter:
“Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress. The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.”
