Tiffany Smith, 27, started as a volunteer with the Browning fire department before being hired full-time by the Beardstown department. Smith, the mother of three boys ages 2, 3 and 8 was trying to find a career path and had been in contact with Beardstown fire Chief Brian Becker when the opportunity arose. Two firefighters had left the fire department with an opening and Smith decided to go for it, she said.
