Free Black man founded first community in New Philadelphia, Illinois

Free Frank McWorter was the first Black person to legally found a community in America in the 1830s. McWorter was an enterprising enslaved Kentucky man who purchased freedom for his pregnant wife, Lucy, then his own, by manufacturing and selling saltpeter. He moved his family to the free state of Illinois in 1831. He bought 80 acres for $100 and founded New Philadelphia, a promising city of brotherly love in Pike County, 20 miles from the slave state of Missouri.

From country-western, the foundation of which was banjo music from Africa, to rock n roll, first played by a Black woman on electric guitar in 1938, each genre of American music has a Black artist (or many) who helped create it.
