Councillor Janet Emsley has been awarded the ‘Best Arts Champion – Councillor’ by Hearts for the Arts for her committed and energetic support of the arts in Rochdale.
The Littleborough Lakeside councillor was shortlisted for the award last month, and Dippy the Dinosaur’s visit to Rochdale was also shortlisted for Best Arts Project.
Discussing Councillor Janet Emsley’s work, the judges said: “Janet sounds like an incredibly passionate and dedicated champion of the arts in Rochdale. Her vital role in ensuring the Dippy Tour came to Rochdale shows the huge impact her work has on her community. I was really impressed by the myriad of ways Janet made valuable contributions and her willingness to adapt to whatever task needed doing.

Arts champion Karen King, who is a member of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, has been shortlisted for the National Campaign for the Arts (NCA) Hearts For The Arts Awards 2021. The Liberal Democrat was nominated for Best Arts Champion for her work in advocating the arts and culture for everyone. She said: “I am shocked, stunned and, of course absolutely delighted to have been nominated for the Best Arts Champion Councillor.

Dippy the Dinosaur’s visit to Rochdale has been shortlisted for a Hearts for the Arts Award for Best Arts Project.
The Natural History Museum s iconic Diplodocus cast visited Rochdale as part of his UK-wide tour in 2020, accompanied by local exhibitions and activities created in collaboration with Link4Life Cultural Trust.
Furthermore, Councillor Janet Emsley has been nominated for ‘Best Arts Champion – Councillor’ for her consistent and energetic support of the arts in Rochdale.
The shortlist has been announced for the National Campaign for the Arts (NCA) Hearts For The Arts Awards 2021, which celebrate the unsung heroes of Local Authorities, championing the arts against all odds.
