Mt Zion AME Church, East Whiteland Township to unveil new historic marker on Sept 9

Devon AME church uses technology to find graves | News

The church and graveyard are both on the National Register of Historic Places with the cornerstone of the church being placed in 1861 just as the Civil War broke out. Jackmon has partnered with the Pennsylvania Hallowed Grounds Project, which is committed to raising awareness of the burial sites and legacies of American colored troops and other early black Pennsylvanians. Through the Hallowed Grounds project, Mt. Zion was brought into contact Jason Herrmann, an anthropological archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. Specializing in the relationship between people and their environment in historical settings, Herrmann is mostly located in places like Turkey and the Middle East, but recently spent three days using geographic information science tools to explore Mt. Zion.
