Board of Police Commissioners prepare to search for new police chief

The search is on to replace Detroit Police Chief James Craig. The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners on Thursday voted unanimously to begin the process of finding a replacement for Craig, who announced his retirement earlier this week. The move comes at a time when violent crime is rising sharply in the city. At Thursday s meeting, Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald said that homicides increased by 31% and non-fatal shootings by 45% in 2021, said Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald.  The board is responsible for selecting candidates for the chief s job under the city charter.  As required under section 7805 of the city charter, the board shall perform its mandated duty to conduct a professional search to identify qualified candidates for Detroit police chief, said board chairman Willie Bell.

Stephanie Sinclaire Lightsmith obituary

Stephanie Sinclaire Lightsmith obituary Katherine Wyeth My mother, Stephanie Sinclaire Lightsmith, who has died aged 67 by accidental drowning in New Zealand, was a screenwriter, theatre practitioner and filmmaker, as well as a published poet and novelist. She was also an artistic director of the King’s Head theatre in London, which was founded by her husband, Dan Crawford. She was born in New York to Howard Weiss, a lawyer, and Bernice Smith, an artist. After her parents divorced, her mother married a jazz musician, Joseph diLalla, heralding a peripatetic lifestyle that saw the family move continually across the US. Stephanie attended high school at Windsor Mountain in Massachusetts and then went to the California College of Art. After returning to New York, she reunited with her high school friend Matthew Kastin, whom she married in 1980. The couple moved to the Berkshires in Massachusetts, where I was born in 1982.

Tuscaloosa church donates to Jefferson County storm victims

Tuscaloosa church donates to Jefferson County storm victims Donations delivered to JeffCo storm victims By Kelvin Reynolds | February 11, 2021 at 5:04 PM CST - Updated February 11 at 5:04 PM BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Volunteers spent Thursday morning filling a U-Haul truck with donations going to tornado victims in Jefferson County. “The community came out. The church and the community came out and pulled through to get this truck full,” Bernice Smith told WBRC. Tuscaloosa’s Weeping Mary Baptist Church jumped into action soon after storms hit neighboring Jefferson County last month. Word of mouth among the congregation soon spread beyond the four walls of the church to donate essentials for folks who may have lost nearly everything. They asked for and received donations of water, cleaning supplies and many other things.
