Agroecology in Africa: Silver bullet or pathway to poverty?
A MODEL of agroecology that limits farming inputs in Africa to solely indigenous materials is meeting resistance from farmers and others who worry it will most likely force even more people on the continent into poverty and hunger.

“The agroecology promoters will use terms like indigenous foods, indigenous crops, indigenous everything. Like we want to exclude new varieties that are coming. But even the corn we eat today is not from Africa. It’s from America,” observed Pacifique Nshimiyimana, a young farmer and agricultural enterpreneur from Rwanda.

CIKOD has called for government’s support for the informal seed system
The Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has called for government’s support for the informal seed system in the country.
Such support according to the NGO will help develop the local seed system and eliminate challenges posed by the formal seed system including difficulty in accessibility and cost.
Mr Bernard Guri, the Executive Director of CIKOD made the call during a radio discussion on Lawra FM in the Lawra Municipality of the Upper West Region.
“Rather than having our farmers battle with challenges of accessibility and cost, we are advocating for massive government support to improve the local seed system”, he said.
A book, Surviving COVID-19: The Neglected Remedy has been launched in Lawra to educate and motivate people to grow and consume locally nutritious foods for improved health against the world s deadliest disease.
The book; a mini barefoot guide for agroecology series, put together by the Natural Food Barefoot Guide Writer s Collective 2020 for the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), was launched by the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD); a member of the Alliance.
The 30-page book is divided into five chapters namely; Chapter One The best medicine to fight the Coronavirus , Chapter Two Nature s food garden , Chapter Three Finding food for strong bodies , Chapter Four An African celebration of good food medicine and Chapter Five Food medicine from Africa for Africans .

Two non-governmental organizations; Center for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD) And Abrono Organic Farming Project (ABOFAP) with which both are headquartered at Accra and Techiman respectively have constructed a mini ultramodern Market at Forikrom a town in the Techiman Municipality Wich was funded by Agroecology fund the to relieve congestion of traders at the tense Market at Techiman in order to avoid the spread of COVID 19 the country
