In a lofty studio in east London, the photographer has paused her shoot while Matt Lucas, dressed as a top-hatted showman, gives me his recipe for chicken soup. ‘Being a Jewish boy, I am proud of my process in making it,’ says the 46-year-old Little Britain star turned Great British Bake Off host, describing a detailed method involving a 32-litre pan, ‘soup socks’ to hold copious amounts of veg and 48 hours of simmering. ‘The other day I batch-cooked about 25 portions,’ he says. ‘I’ve got more experimental with my cooking too. And have eaten more of it. Which needs to be sorted out.’ He pats his midriff ruefully.
