December 14, 2017, was an historic day for Ireland’s Deaf community. The Dáil passed the Irish Sign Language Act, recognising ISL as the language of the Deaf community, but its significance went beyond the symbolic.
The Deaf community is familiar with progress and is happy to acknowledge that progress. Over the course of a half-hour conversation with Bernadette O’Connor and Micheál Kelliher – both members of the Deaf community who live in Kerry – neither ignores the improvements that have taken place, even if some of these improvements are largely symbolic gestures, or developments that, if right were right, should already have been in place.
