The national costume worn by the Miss Universe delegate in Florida on May 14, 2021, is a hand-painted ensemble inspired by Singapore’s flag and bears the words “Stop Asian Hate.”

The show, which was delayed last year due to the ongoing coronavirus endemic, returned on May 16th to crown their new winner. And found a worthy candidate in Miss Mexico Andrea Meza out of the 74 women who competed in the competition. The 26-year-old Andrea, who had previously won the Miss Mexico crown in 2019, took home the Miss Universe crown, beating out runner-up, Miss Brazil Julia Gama, and second runner-up, Miss Peru Janick Maceta Del Castillo.

The competition, which takes place on 16 May 2021, will be held in Florida in the United States. Ong, born and raised in the Philippines, shares more about how she got started in the pageant industry and gets real on some of the pressures she’s faced while competing. How did you get into pageantry? I actually started pageantry when I was in university. I was in SIM-RMIT, and I did [pageantry] recreationally as a way to make new friends. I ended up winning the competition in 2014. I then moved on to work in events, production, and commercial work. This eventually led me to this competition by the Singapore Racecourse centred around pageantry in line with their SIA
