Fears over insurance and liability in case of an accident have seen a stretch on the popular Wichelstowe canal closed to the public. The waterway is blocked at either end of the stretch running through West Leaze farm just a few hundred yards north of the Waitrose supermarket at the heart of the Wichelstowe housing development. And it means popular boat trips run by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust have had to stop. Farmer David Watkins says he has blocked it to boat traffic on the advice of his lawyers. He explained the farm has been owned by his family since 1985 when the route of the canal had been filled in and was dry. It has since been re-opened.
