This index ranked the United States 161st out of 172 countries measured, according to study co-author Stephen Menendian, citing the country’s “fractured” response, which also coincided with former president Donald Trump’s tenure.

Maryland among top 10 on study ranking responses to COVID-19

Updated: 11:36 AM EDT Apr 7, 2021 Maryland is ranked among the top 10 most effective states in responding to the coronavirus pandemic last year, according to a new study by the University of California, Berkeley s Othering and Belonging Institute.The study found state government responses varied greatly. Some state governments tended to oppose mass shutdowns of the economy to slow the spread of the virus, while others were more aggressive in ordering shelter-in-place mandates and social distancing rules.Vermont, Alaska and Maine were the three most effective states in responding to the pandemic, the study found, while the poorest response to the virus came from South Dakota, Iowa and Mississippi.Maryland ranked ninth in the study.Out of the 172 countries in the study, the three most successful responses to COVID-19 came from the United Arab Emirates, Denmark and Iceland. Other successful countries that were profiled in the report include New Zealand, Vietnam and Rwanda.Acc

Report Ranks Arizona s COVID-19 Response Among Worst In U S

Arizona’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was among the least effective of any state, according to a new report from University of California, Berkeley.  The UC Berkeley Othering and Belonging Institute every year reports on how states and countries’ policies impact marginalized communities. The 2020 report focused on COVID-19. “COVID presented an opportunity or a test to look at our commitments towards inclusion and equity,” said Samir Gambhir, one of the report s authors. The pandemic hit communities of color and elderly populations especially hard, highlighting social inequalities, Gambhir said. The report considered how states’ public health responses impacted vulnerable communities. Arizona ranked 47th.
