In the last week, the Benue governor, Father Hyacinth Alia, approached the Benue House of Assembly with allegations of corruption against the 23 democratically-elected local government chairmen of the state seeking the House to investigate them and to advise him, and the House in turn set up a 3-man ad-hoc committee to do the investigation and revert to the House within 2 weeks. Not quite a few hours later the ad-hoc committee completed the entire investigation for all 23 local government areas covering up to 3 months and reported to the House!

Benue State Governor Suspends All 23 Local Council Chairmen For Mismanaging Funds

The Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has suspended all 23 local government chairmen and their councillors. The Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ode Ochelle, in a letter dated June 23, 2023, directed to all the 23 local government chairmen and leaders of the 23 house, said the suspension was with immediate effect. The State House of Assembly had on Wednesday recommended to the governor to suspend chairmen and legislative arms of the 23 local governments of the state.
