Millions of people have been separating their recyclables for decades, but a few folks in Elizabethton still seem to be having trouble with the concept.
HAMPTON â The first of a series of cleanups of litter from East Tennessee rivers and lakes was a success despite the cold weather, according to Ed Jordan, president of Keep Carter County Beautiful.
âThe Watauga Lake cleanup last Saturday was a success,â Jordan said. âThanks to all the volunteers who braved the cold weather and water that made this event a great success.â
The event was the kickoff of a series of four cleanups in the Cherokee National Forest River Cleanup presented by Volkswagen.
The remaining events of the series will be held at South Holston Lake on Saturday, Feb. 13, starting at 10 a.m. at the launch point at 19482 County Park Road in Abingdon, Virginia; Tellico Lake on Saturday, Feb. 20; Parksville Lake on Saturday, Feb. 27; and the Ocoee River on Sunday, Feb. 28.
ELIZABETHTON â The cost of using the Carter County Landfill will be going up on March 1.
The Carter County Commission approved a recommendation from the Landfill Committee to raise the tipping fee by $9.50 per ton for both household garbage and for demolition waste.
The cost will be going from $42.50 to $52 per ton. The disposal cost for bagged trash will remain $1 for each standard size garbage bag.
The Commission approved the increase by a vote of 19-4. Voting against the increase were: Robert Acuff, Randall Jenkins, Sonja Culler and Kelly Collins.
The Landfill Committee approved the increase in order for the landfill operations to be self-supporting in operations and equipment.
