Schumer urges American, Canadian governments to work together to reopen border

MASSENA — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer urged the United States and Canadian governments to work together to reopen the border as quickly and safely as possible during a stop Wednesday afternoon at the Massena International Airport. Canada and the United States have most recently agreed to extend the ban on nonessential travel between the United States and Canada through May 21. Leaders in both countries first announced the border closure on March 21, 2020, and have extended the order on a near-monthly basis since. “We all know that border crossings are the key in the north country economy. It’s estimated that Canadian travelers, over 2.3 million of them in 2019 came through the three land ports of entry along the St. Lawrence River and they contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the north country’s economy,” Sen. Schumer said.

Restructured St Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce reflects on pandemic business, local tourism

CANTON — A cornerstone of local economic development, the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is entering the second quarter of 2021 having learned from and adapted to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. During its annual presentation to the county Board of Legislators, at the top of the board’s Services Committee meeting Monday night, the Chamber briefed lawmakers on organizational changes, 2020 tourism data and outdoor exploration initiatives launching this year. Reflective of canceled in-person programming, the Chamber cut two event staff positions, while Assistant Director Michael V. Besaw resigned for a new opportunity. Personnel dipped from six people to three, but a new tourism director position was created, dividing marketing and programming responsibilities across both business and tourism sectors.
